Eyebrow transplants at Hair Transplant Belfast restore lost or thinning eyebrow hair using follicles extracted from the scalp. The procedure uses the DHI technique with a Choi implanter pen to place each follicle at the precise angle required to replicate natural brow growth. Results are permanent.

Eyebrow Transplant in Belfast

Eyebrow hair loss has several causes. Over-plucking over many years can cause permanent follicle damage. Alopecia, thyroid disorders, trauma and scarring, trichotillomania, and chemotherapy can all produce partial or complete brow loss. Some people have sparse brows as a genetic trait rather than as a result of loss. A transplant addresses all of these presentations.

The DHI technique is the method of choice for eyebrow restoration, as it is for beard transplants. The Choi implanter pen gives the surgeon direct control over the angle of each graft, which is critical for the brow area. Natural eyebrow hair grows at a very low angle, almost parallel to the skin, and the angle changes across the brow from the inner to the outer edge. Getting this right requires both technical precision and a thorough understanding of brow anatomy.

Graft counts for eyebrow transplants are much lower than scalp work. A full brow restoration typically requires 200 to 400 grafts per brow, depending on how much existing hair remains. Partial restoration of specific gaps requires fewer.

Design and Natural Appearance

The shape of the brows is agreed with the patient before the procedure. We work from a combination of photographs and direct consultation to establish the shape, arch, tail length, and density. Patients who have a reference for the shape they want should bring photographs to the consultation.

Because the transplanted follicles come from the scalp, the hair will grow at the rate of scalp hair rather than the slower growth rate of natural brow hair. The same donor supply is used for scalp procedures including hairline restoration, crown transplants, and transgender hair restoration, so combined treatment planning matters for patients considering more than one area. Women with hair loss who also want eyebrow restoration should discuss the combined graft demand at consultation. This means regular trimming is required, usually every two to three weeks, as the brows establish. This is a permanent feature of the transplanted result that patients should factor into their decision.

Recovery

Recovery from eyebrow transplant is straightforward. The brow area is small and the total procedure time is typically two to three hours. Swelling and redness around the eyes may occur in the first two to three days. Transplanted hairs shed at two to four weeks and new growth begins from around three months, with the full result visible at 12 months.

Patients who also want scalp hair restoration should discuss combined treatment planning, as both areas use the same donor supply.

Eyebrow Transplant vs Microblading

Microblading is a semi-permanent tattooing technique that deposits pigment into the skin to simulate the appearance of brow hairs. It is a non-surgical option and can produce natural-looking results for up to two to three years before it requires refreshing. For some patients with mild brow thinning or those who do not want surgery, microblading is a reasonable short-term solution.

The difference with a transplant is permanence and authenticity. Transplanted follicles grow real hair that behaves exactly like the hair you were born with. The brows can be trimmed, tinted and shaped. They grow and respond to the environment in a way that pigment in the skin does not. Microblading fades over time and requires maintenance appointments every 12 to 18 months indefinitely. The appearance changes as the pigment breaks down, and the result does not look the same after one year as it does immediately after treatment. A transplant is a one-time procedure with a permanent result.

Microblading also has limitations for patients with complete brow loss. Without any texture or dimension, flat pigment in the skin reads differently from real hair at close range. For patients wanting a result that looks fully natural in all lighting conditions and at all distances, a transplant is the more robust option.

The Role of Angle in Eyebrow Restoration

Natural eyebrow hair grows at a very low angle, almost parallel to the skin surface. The angle changes significantly from the inner brow to the outer edge. At the medial end, near the nose, hairs tend to grow upward and slightly outward. Moving toward the arch, the direction shifts to a more lateral angle. At the tail, hairs grow almost horizontally outward and slightly downward.

Reproducing this directional variation accurately is one of the most technically demanding aspects of eyebrow transplantation. A graft placed at even a slightly steeper angle than the natural brow hairs will lift away from the skin as it grows, giving the brow a three-dimensional quality that looks different from the surrounding hair and draws attention.

At Hair Transplant Belfast, eyebrow transplants are performed using the DHI technique with a Choi implanter pen, which allows the surgeon to set the angle of each individual graft at placement. This level of control is not achievable when placing grafts into pre-made channels in the conventional way.

Who Is Not a Candidate for an Eyebrow Transplant?

Patients with active alopecia areata affecting the brow area are not appropriate candidates until the condition is in stable remission. Alopecia areata can affect transplanted follicles as well as native ones, so surgery during an active phase risks losing the transplanted hair to the same immune process.

Patients who have trichotillomania, the compulsive pulling of hair, should complete psychological treatment and demonstrate a sustained period of stable brow hair before considering surgery. A transplant on an area that continues to be pulled will not hold.

Patients who have had radiotherapy to the brow area should discuss their history at consultation. Radiation can damage the blood supply and tissue bed in the recipient area, affecting graft survival. Candidacy in these cases requires individual assessment.

FAQs

The area is anaesthetised before treatment begins. The anaesthetic injections in the brow area are brief and most patients find them comparable to other facial procedures. Once established, there is minimal discomfort during the transplant. Swelling around the eyes is common in the first 48 hours but settles quickly.

Transplanted brow hairs shed at two to four weeks post-procedure. New growth begins from three months. The brows continue to fill in and mature up to 12 months. Some patients see earlier results, but the full outcome takes time.

Yes. Scalp follicles grow faster than natural brow hair. Once established, the transplanted brows will need trimming every two to three weeks to maintain the desired shape. This is a permanent feature of the result.

Yes. Total eyebrow loss can be addressed with a transplant. The graft count and design are agreed at consultation. The more complete the loss, the more grafts are required and the more important it is to agree on the shape before the procedure, as there is no existing brow to guide the design.

Yes, but both procedures use the same donor supply. This applies whether you are planning FUE or FUT for the scalp. If you are planning both, discuss this at consultation so the total graft demand can be assessed. In some cases, staging is recommended.

Yes. Transplanted follicles are taken from the permanent donor zone and retain their growth characteristics after implantation. The results are lifelong, though ongoing conditions such as alopecia that caused the original loss may affect the transplanted hairs over time if not managed.
